"Featherweights" is an international documentary film that explores the underground world of songbird singing competitions in New York City and abroad throughout Latin America and Asia. "Bird Racing," is a sport where male songbirds are not harmed but compete against one another in a singing competition. Mostly underground in the US, this is a fully sanctioned sport internationally with a huge following. Brought to the US by Latin American and Asian immigrants, I followed this sport and discovered a world most never knew existed with high dollar champion birds, belts, bloodlines, pedigrees, politicians, corruption, high stakes gambling, international wildlife smuggling rings, a criminal underworld, and a whole lot of money on the line for a little singing bird.
